Romania is set to officially join the Unitary Patent System on September 1, 2024, following its ratification on May 31, 2024. With this addition, the system will cover 18 EU Member States, enhancing the efficiency of patent protection throughout Europe. Introduced on June 1, 2023, the Unitary Patent System aims to simplify patent procedures by offering a unified application process and reducing the need for translations.

Romania's participation is expected to offer significant advantages to businesses and inventors by providing more extensive and cost-effective patent coverage. The European Patent Office (EPO) has welcomed Romania's accession, noting its importance in reinforcing the European patent framework and encouraging innovation.

Compared to the traditional European Patent system, the Unitary Patent System streamlines the process by allowing a single application to secure patent protection across multiple countries. It also features a unified litigation mechanism through the Unified Patent Court (UPC), promoting consistent enforcement of patent rights across member states.

Romania’s entry is anticipated to boost domestic innovation and economic development by simplifying access to patent protection for local entrepreneurs. It also makes the country more attractive to international investors, as Romania will now be automatically included in Unitary Patent coverage without additional administrative burdens.

This expansion marks another step toward a more cohesive and efficient European patent environment, supporting the EU’s broader objectives of fostering innovation and improving global competitiveness.
