A new and improved trademark classification system came into effect in January 2024

According to a press release from WIPO:

The 2024 update to the twelfth edition of the Nice Classification introduces several modifications compared to the previous edition. This notice aims to inform the trademark offices of Madrid Union member countries, as well as applicants and rights holders, about how the International Bureau of WIPO will handle applications for international trademark registration during the transition to this updated classification system.

Starting January 1, 2024, the International Bureau will use the 2024 version of the twelfth edition of the Nice Classification for:

– Any international registration application submitted to the originating office on or after January 1, 2024;

– Any international registration application received by WIPO on or after January 1, 2024, if it arrives after the two-month period outlined in Article 3(4) of the Protocol Relating to the Madrid Agreement on the International Registration of Marks.
